Interesting Stats About Prescription Drugs Online...

October 15, 2004

"Only 4 percent of Americans have ever used the Internet to buy prescription drugs…"

A couple of days ago I read a CBS news report that started like that.

And I thought to myself "Only?"

4 percent is approximately 10 million people.

Which is also 1 in 25 US citizens. Would you have thought that out of every 25 people you know one person had shopped for prescription drugs online?

CBS were quoting a survey carried out by the Pew Research Foundation which has a website here.

This had a couple of other interesting findings:

The most common reason for buying prescription drugs online was convenience. So most people are using the net to buy medications are not looking to save money.

According to the study, most people bought from US online pharmacies. Few bought from Canadian or Mexican Pharmacies.

Of the 4 percent who had bought online, most were satisfied with their purchase and said they would buy again. What type of prescription drugs were purchased?

According to the survey, the most common drugs were purchased, for chronic medication more than for for sexual enhancement and weight loss.

OK, I’m a pretty skeptical about that one. Anyone who knows about online pharmacies knows that weight loss and erection pills sell like hotcakes. Those are where the money is.

And finally one figure that really surprised me:

Two thirds of American households surveyed had someone who was a regular prescription drugs user.

Isn’t that kind of surprising?
